Adult Pet Wellness
Maintaining health in prime years
Why Adult Wellness Matters
The adult years (1-7 for most breeds) are your pet's prime. Preventive care, proper nutrition, and regular exercise help ensure a long, healthy, and happy life. This guide covers the essentials for keeping your adult dog or cat thriving.
Preventive Care
- Annual veterinary exams and vaccinations
- Year-round parasite prevention (fleas, ticks, heartworm, intestinal worms)
- Spay/neuter if not already done
- Regular bloodwork and dental checks as recommended by your vet
Nutrition & Weight Management
- Feed a high-quality, age-appropriate diet. Consult your vet for brand and portion recommendations.
- Monitor body condition and adjust portions to maintain a healthy weight.
- Avoid excessive treats and table scraps.
- Fresh water should always be available.
Exercise & Mental Stimulation
- Daily walks, play sessions, or interactive games
- Enrichment activities: puzzle toys, training, agility, scent work
- Socialization with other pets and people
- Cats: climbing trees, scratching posts, window perches
Dental Care
- Brush your pet's teeth regularly with pet-safe toothpaste
- Provide dental chews, toys, or treats approved by your vet
- Schedule professional dental cleanings as recommended
- Watch for signs of dental disease: bad breath, drooling, difficulty eating
Monitoring Health Changes
- Watch for changes in appetite, weight, energy, or behavior
- Report persistent vomiting, diarrhea, coughing, or limping to your vet
- Early detection of illness leads to better outcomes
